The BLM manages nearly one-eighth of all land within the United States--261 million surface acres--and one-fifth of the land in the Intermountain West. The Bureau, which has a budget of about $1.8 billion and a permanent workforce of about 9,000 employees, also administers on-shore minerals underlying most other Federal lands--a total of about 700 million acres of minerals throughout the nation. Most of this public land is located in 12 Western States including Alaska, and includes some of the most ecologically and culturally diverse and scientifically important lands in Federal ownership.
